How Long Does Home Window Replacement Take?
The time required for window replacement varies based on factors such as window count, size, and the installation method. Here’s a general idea:
- Per window: Typically 30-60 minutes for standard windows.
- Complete home installation: Usually 1-2 days (15-22 windows per day).
- Custom or large windows: These can take 2-4 hours per window due to their size and complexity.
- Total process: Custom window orders take 4-8 weeks to arrive before installation can begin.
The 4-Part Window Replacement Process
1. Sales Consultation
A sales professional comes to your home to collaborate with you on the styles, colors, and types of windows you want replaced. They provide details about the replacement process and help you find a budget-friendly solution to install new energy-efficient windows for your project.
2. Measurement & Pre-Installation Inspection
Once the contract is signed, a service technician will come to the home and verify measurements for the windows identified for replacement during the sales process. The service personnel will also look for any issues related to window replacement that may have been overlooked during the sales process. This could be loose bricks or siding around windows, rotten trim or sills, or any obstructions that could cause installation issues. Our goal is to anticipate the problems before installation day.
3. Ordering & Manufacturing
Based on style, size, and color, Windows usually takes 4-8 weeks to receive in our warehouse. Special requests could take longer, but all the windows ordered are custom-manufactured for the customer’s home.
4. Installation Day
Once the windows are received, Universal Windows Direct personnel will call to schedule an installation day with the homeowner. Installation crews can usually install 15-22 windows per day based on the size and difficulty of the installation. Very seldom are more than two days needed for a home installation.
Before removing any window scheduled for replacement, the installation crew will verify all measurements. Accuracy in measurements directly affects the success and speed of the replacement. Once the crew has confirmed the measurements, they will check with the homeowner to determine a preferred starting point. After that, they will begin removing and reinstalling the windows. In most cases, one worker will remove a window while another installs the new one. Workers will also clean as they go.
Precautions will be taken if the installation occurs on a hot, cold, or windy day. For example, extra plastic may be taped inside the window opening on windy days to reduce dust. If the weather is harsh, we may only remove a couple of windows at a time.
Many homeowners ask us to start in a specific room so their pets (cats and dogs) can be safely kept in a room where windows are completed first. This gives pets a place of refuge during the installation process.
